Overview
A fantasy TV show convention + two geeks (one gay, recently out, and struggling with a conservative upbringing; one gay, out for a while, and REALLY sexy) = a modern romantic musical comedy. But with cosplay.

The driving electronica score and wildly funny, sharp and sweet story meld together to create a fresh and life-affirming musical that pivots between real life and the sci-fi megahit Castaway Planet.

Things that are easy: losing yourself in your favorite fantasy world.  Things that are hard: love stuff, which decidedly takes place in the real world. Based on the novel by J.C. Lillis, How To Repair A Mechanical Heart asks can two fanboys face down their obstacles and write themselves a real-life romance — or is fiction the only thing bringing them together?

Go on, listen to that first track "Can You Imagine."  Now good luck getting it out of your head...

Plot
The show tells the story of Brandon, recently out but struggling with a conservative upbringing, who finally musters up the courage to meet IRL, and not just over FaceTime chats, with Abel, the sexiest gay geek alive. The guys, who met on a fanfiction chat group, along with Brandon’s best friend and nerd skeptic Bec, hit the road in an RV to attend a convention for their favorite TV show, Castaway Planet. During their two-week cross-country adventure, Brandon and Abel uncover secrets about each other, spar with an online community of fan fiction writers, meet their TV idols, and maybe possibly fall in love.

BRANDON PAGE
Principal
18, any ethnicity, male. A diehard “Castaway Planet” fan, quietly witty, a bit shy and awkward, and consumed with anxieties he tries his best to conceal. He came out to his parents and close friends at the beginning of the school year, and intellectually he's accepted himself and distanced himself from the church, but the biases and fears he absorbed as a child still haunt him.
Baritenor to Bb4
ABEL MCNAUGHTON
Principal
18, any ethnicity, male. Orderly, even-keeled, and seemingly confident, Abel is an eccentric, loud, and outlandish superfan of “Castaway Planet.” Abel has been out and proud since age thirteen and is much more sexually experienced than Brandon. Abel presents as brash, witty, tough to embarrass, and a little bossy, but is really a bit lonely since his supportive parents have been increasingly absent from his life.
Tenor belt to B4 (with strong falsetto)
MISS MAXIMA (ELIZABETH)
Principal
20 , any ethnicity, female. A devoted “Castaway Planet” fanfic writer, she has a flair for the dramatic and favors pillbox hats, leopard prints, and five-alarm red lipstick. She relishes power and loves the thrill she gets from leading her fan community and engaging in heated “ship wars” with fans who reject her shipping couplings.
High belt to G5; soprano to C6
BEC
Supporting
18, any ethnicity, female. Brandon's closest friend since early childhood, Bec is confident, snarky, empathetic, and insightful. For Bec, the road trip is also serving as an escape from strife within her household, and the fact that Brandon seems too wrapped up in his own issues to notice hers is a source of simmering tension between them.
Belt to E5
DAVE
Supporting
20, any ethnicity, male. College student, Castaway Planet fanboy, works at a sci-fi bookstore called The Robot’s Bookshelf. He's a frequent panel moderator at Castacon and something of a celebrity in the fan groups.
Tenor to A4
DAD (GREG PAGE)
Principal
42, any ethnicity, male. Chief Financial Officer of a community health center, cultivator of bonsai trees and roses, fan of Philly sports teams, lover of hiking and nature. Since Brandon came out, he’s been struggling to reconcile his love for his son with what he perceives are his moral imperatives.
Baritone to G4
MOM (KATHY PAGE)
Supporting
42, any ethnicity, female, elementary school teacher, reader of mysteries, sewer of prom gowns and Halloween costumes, maker of “angel eggs” for the annual St. Matt’s Funfair. Her belief in God is simple and unwavering, but she’s a bit more willing than her husband to question official church teachings, especially when they cause pain to her loved ones.
Mix/belt to D5
PASTOR MIKE
Supporting
late 30s, any ethnicity, male. The Page Family's minister. Misguided in his single-sightedness, he alienates Brandon with the narrow vision in what God would approve of.
Baritone to D4
LENNY BRAY
Supporting
40s, any ethnicity, male, creator and showrunner of Castaway Planet. Eternally rumpled and coffee-stained, reclusive, sharp-tongued, and insecure; loves what he does but hates dealing with the relentless onslaught of questions, demands, and complaints from passionate Castaway fans.
CAVEGRRL94
Ensemble
Late teens, any ethnicity, female. One of the Cadsim shippers, she’s wound the tightest of the girls, overly excited at the notion of sex actually happening between any of these characters. In her daily life, she’s a frequent and incorrect user of the word “literally” and communicates through squealing as much as actual words.
High belt/mix to G5
MURKLURK
Ensemble
Late teens, any ethnicity, female. One of the Cadsim shippers, she’s a bit on the dry and saucy side. She has no problem being a bit more direct and bawdy than her counterparts and vibes the best with Miss Maxima.
Alto with mix to Eb5
SIMBELINA
Ensemble
Late teens, any ethnicity, female. One of the Cadsim shippers, a bit more bookish, this is her way of letting go and being “naughty.” She’s an organizer and likes routine and order so allowing herself this one vice is her time to let her hair down and be one of the girls.
Alto/soprano with belt/mix to E5
CAPTAIN JAMES CADMUS (played by ED RANSOME)
Ensemble
30s, any ethnicity, male - Captain Cadmus is a divisive character on “Castaway Planet” with some (like Brandon) thinking he’s a smug bastard whose arrogance and game-playing with Xaarg interferes with the crew’s chances of getting home while others (like Abel) admiring his wit, courage, self-assurance, and willingness to take chances. His close relationship with android Sim has inspired reams of fanfic and fanart.
ED RANSOME (portrays CAPTAIN CADMUS)
Ensemble
30s, any ethnicity, male - An Australian Chris Hemsworth-type with an inflated ego and a love of fan adoration and grandstanding.
Tenor to A4
SIM (played by DAVID DARRAS)
Ensemble
30s, any ethnicity, male. Right-hand robot and confidante of Captain Cadmus, he is frequently shipped with him in fanfic. As cool and collected as Cadmus is hotheaded and impulsive, Sim is fascinated by humans and longs to experience more complex emotions, but after he gets his mechanical heart, he finds that fear and pain are too difficult to deal with and destroys it.
DAVID DARRAS (portrays SIM)
Ensemble
30s, any ethnicity, male - He’s a former soap star excited for this new chapter in his career with the hopes that he’ll be taken more seriously. He adores trending and giving fan service especially if it inflates his relevance and provides good PR stunts and photo ops.
Baritenor to G4
BREE LARUE
Ensemble
20s, any ethnicity, female. Plays Leandra Neigh on “Castaway Planet,” she’s a bubbly bodacious blonde bombshell not known for her smarts. At one time mesmerized by the gorgeous shellac of her industry, her recent break up with fellow TV star, Trevor Hunt, has caused her to rebel against the fakeness of it all.
TOM SHANDLEY
Ensemble
40s, any ethnicity, male. Plays Xaarg on “Castaway Planet,” he is a self-important, preening douchebag. Smarmy and patronizing, he speaks to people with a familiarity that is more condescending than inviting.
DELLA WOLFE-WILLIAMS
Ensemble
40s, any ethnicity, female. Plays Dr. Zara Lagarde on “Castaway Planet,” she’s a method actor always willing to talk about “the craft.” She’s open, gracious, and gregarious with a desire to explain things thoroughly and impassion them with her same level of enthusiasm.
KADE
Ensemble
22, any ethnicity, male. One of Abel’s hook-ups, he’s a gorgeous, eight-packed, weight-lifting, wheatgrass drinking idiot. Bearer of phoenix tattoos and maker of franchise subs and sandwiches, his appeal is purely aesthetic.
